Costa Martiánez Complex

May 26, 2008

The municipal complex of Costa Martiánez, the pride of Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most widely admired examples of coastal transformation anywhere. A prestigious team of experts, led by the famous artist from Lanzarote, Cesar Manrique, carried out this work that blends in perfectly with traditional Canary Island architecture and boasts native plants and original sculptures.

The artificial lake, with some 27,000 cubic meters of sea water, highlights the other four adult pools and three childrenŽs pools. All is beautifully set in an original layout. There is a wide range of bars, restaurants, stalls and a night club – the only one in the world below sea level – giving the complex a very special vitality and making it one of the most striking attractions of the whole island.

Playa Jardin, Puerto de la Cruz

May 26, 2008

Jardin beach is a combination of the natural beauty of the island and the creative genius of César Manrique, a dearly remembered Canarian artist who was famous for his work involving natural spaces around the island. It is on the coast of the tourist resort Puerto de la Cruz, very close to the famous Loro Parque. Jardin beach has the full range of facilities, as well as a horizontal breakwater that protects part of the swimming area. Its name symbolises the numerous gardens located along the edge of the beach.

El Bollullo

May 26, 2008

For many people in Tenerife El Bollullo beach is one of the most beautiful on the island. It is also one of the most isolated and difficult to get to. Although a simple beach bar is the only facility visitors will find, it is impossible not to appreciate the beauty of its 400 metres of fine volcanic sand, the extraordinary clarity of its water, and the peaceful and cosmopolitan atmosphere created by those that go there.

At El Bollullo beach the currents and waves can be quite strong and dangerous, so it is wise to take care even when the sea looks calm. You also need to be careful with the sun as there are no sun umbrellas and not much shade available. The beach is located in the district of La Orotava, in the area called El Rincón, and is not easy to get to as there is no road. Access is by way of steps that make their way down between banana plantations, the walk down only takes a few minutes.

Before getting to the beach you to need leave your car in the pay and display car park of the El Bollullo restaurant. Take the exit for Puerto de la Cruz off the TF-5 motorway, you will need to take a different exit to the one that takes you to the tourist resort, and drive down to the coast via the area called El Rincón. At the restaurant San Diego take the turning on the left along a narrow road towards the beach. It is also possible to get there on foot from the tourist resort of Puerto de la Cruz, setting off from the Martiánez area or from the well-known “Urbanización La Paz.” This will take between 45 minutes and an hour. Los Patos Beach is also nearby but you will need to take a different and more difficult route to get there.

Climbing

May 26, 2008

The type of volcanic rock on the island, the excellent year round climate and the large number of climbing areas for all levels makes Tenerife a popular destination for European climbers wishing to combine their holidays with some climbing practice. There are almost a thousand different routes all over the island, the best being the internationally-known Barranco de Arico and the spectacular Cañada del Capricho in the heart of the Teide National Park.

The district of Arico, in the south of Tenerife, is the perfect place for climbing. It has 200 well-equipped routes along the “barranco” (ravine) that bears the same name. Higher up the ravine the climbs are of an easy to medium level, while the lower climbs are just for advanced climbers.

La Cañada del Capricho, in the Teide National Park, has almost a hundred routes around the highest mountain in Spain and is another outstanding area for climbing. The fantastic scenery here will really impress you with its unique shapes and colours.

Other areas that are good for practising this sport are the Mesa de Tejina with easy routes, Valle Tabares, protected routes near the capital of the island and Martiánez, a cliff situated in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz.

Tenerife Shopping

May 26, 2008

Tenerife has always had a great commercial tradition. There are a huge variety of shops in the main shopping areas of the cities and tourist resorts that will ensure you have a great time on any shopping trip. There are famous brand names and competitive prices thanks to the special fiscal system in the Canary Islands that doesn’t include VAT.

In the tourist resorts shops open every day, including Sundays and Bank Holidays and have long opening hours. In Santa Cruz, La Laguna and non-tourist areas shops are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays, except in December.

Tenerife’s crafts make the perfect gift or souvenir. In craft shops you can find a whole range of meticulously made items by the artisans of the island. Embroidery, Canarian knives, woodwork, basketwork and pottery are just some examples of the great craftwork available. The “Cabildo de Tenerife,” (Government of Tenerife) has developed a network of craft shops that sell authentic pieces stamped with “Artenerife” to guarantee their origin. However there are also many other shops where you can buy authentic Canarian craftwork.

Puerto de la Cruz

May 26, 2008

It is the main tourist centre of the province and one of the most important in Spain, with a marvellous climate. Martianez beach and excellent natural pools are found on Colón Avenue. Along the coast, the Martianez complex was built by César Manrique and attracts many tourists. Puerto de la Cruz has magnificent hotel establishments and others, night clubs with international attractions, excellent restaurants and cafés as well as other tourist facilities, which all contribute to giving it a busy air. Numerous national and international congresses and conventions are held there. Also very interesting is the Acclimatization Garde, built in 1788 on the order of Carlos III. It lies halfway between La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz, to acclimatize plants and trees from all over the world. A visit should also include San Felipe Castle and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia as well as the Naval Museum of Iriarte House (in the street of the same name), which shows the history and evolution of navigation.

Nightlife in Puerto

May 26, 2008

The highlight of an evening in Tenerife is the dinner.

What to do after dinner? If you spent the whole sunny day at the beach, had a heavy dinner with wine and a few brandies with your coffee, it is not such a bad idea to go to your hotel room and fall asleep. At least then you’ll be fit for the beach again in the morning.

… but there are other alternatives as well! Puerto de la Cruz offers nightlife to every taste. The center of entertainment is Avenida de Colón and its neighbouring streets. Just walk around and listen where the sound best fitting your mood comes from and join in.

Perhaps the best known restaurant with dancing in Puerto is ‘Café de Paris’ at Avenida de Colón. Another always popular venue is ‘Caballo Blanco’ at San Telmo. And the third venue of eternal popularity is ‘Zhivago’ at Puerto Viejo. A newcomer is the bar of the hotel ‘Noelia Playa’ at Avenida de Hermanos Fernandez Perdigon near the Playa Jardin beach. The atmosphere there is very relaxed. The most stylish venue is perhaps ‘El Coto’ in Hotel Botánico.

The young and young minded fill the discos at about midnight. The ‘bailando’ goes on to the early hours of morning. The most popular discos are ‘Victoria’ (over 30 years old!), Avenida de Colón, ‘Joy’, Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceras and ‘Concordia Club’, Avenida de Venezuela. In Los Realjos there is the disco ‘Coco-Loco’ of Hotel Maritim ; in La Paz disco ‘Qatar’.

Everywhere you can clearly see that people are on holiday and really enjoy themselves. On the dancing floors of the discos you see real performances and you can’t resist joining in. Everybody is happy and friendly and after a few drinks most people speak fluently all European languages.

If you like more peaceful atmosphere and mood music, choose a bar of a top class hotel like the ‘Tropical Palace’.

An unforgettable night can be spent in the nightclub ‘Isla del Lago’ located under Lago Martianéz. The international floor show is absolutely worth seeing. The admission is at least EUR 18 (the sum depends on whether you have dinner there or not).

There is an entrance fee to most discos and nightclubs. Usually it covers the first drink.

Genuine salsa can be enjoyed at the ‘Palacio de la Salsa’ in San Jerónimo, La Orotava.

Karaoke? Of course! E.g. in ‘The Cavern’ at Avenida de Blas Perez Gonzáles or in ‘The Buccaneer’ at Avenida del Generalisimo.

Cabaret? Sure! E.g. in the British Cabaret Bar ‘Harlequins’, Avenida Generalisimo 1. The place is packed with British tourists but there is always room for your party too.

‘Casino Taoro’ (built in 1892) is a must. The atmosphere there is sophisticated and men are expected to wear a jacket. At the Casino you can win a jackpot of one million euros with only one euro’s bet! It is just as likely as getting seven right in the Finnish lotto. The restaurant there serves fine food in grand surroundings. The bar is famous for its drinks. Youll remember for a long time the taste of ‘Cocktail Taoro’ (one of the ingredients of the drink is caviar!). The Casino opens at 7 o’clock. Many taxis take you there for free. Remember to take your passport with you! The entrance fee is EUR 3,00.

A very cosy evening can be spent in some of the multinous English pubs. They are of course crowded with the English but other nationalities are welcome as well. There are no dancing floors in the pubs but still improvised dances are arranged many nights, great fun!

Puerto de la Cruz

May 26, 2008

Puerto de La Cruz is the most popular resort in the north of Tenerife, just 35 km from Santa Cruz.

It offers everything that you may need. It was originally a small fishing village but now is host to bars, restaurants, shops and a casino. The main strip, Avenida de Colon, leads off to a plethora of side-streets, lined with shops selling bargains such as alcohol, jewellery and lace. The town’s traditional main square should be visited, to experience the buzzing atmosphere. The old part of the town remains charmingly innocent and unchanged.
