Mountainbiking-Tip: Aguamansa – Chanajiga – Aguamansa

May 26, 2008

This route, which is flat for most of its length, runs through the Orotava Valley at the border between the laurisilva woodland and the pine forest, at an average height above sea level of 1200 metres. The trip starts at kilometre 16 on the TF-21 road (which runs from La Orotava up to Mount Teide) at the turn for the La Caldera recreational area. Although there are many side tracks, you have to attempt to stay on the main one until you reach the Chanajiga Recreational Area, in the municipal district of Los Realejos.

At kilometre 14.9, there is a lengthy uphill stretch of two and a half kilometres until you reach another track that runs parallel to and higher than the first. Throughout the run there are spectacular views of Mount Teide and the Orotava Valley. The entire run is on dirt tracks until you come to the Mataznos Panoramic Viewing Point (Km. 30.1 of TF-21), from where you have to ride three kilometres down the road until you come back to the La Caldera entrance.
